【SMM Nickel Market Flash】Pankaj K. Satija, Managing Director of Tata Steel Mining Ltd., outlined a three-pronged strategy to address India’s shortage of critical minerals: (1) enhancing mining and processing of virgin resources, (2) recovering associated minerals like nickel and chromite as co-products from existing operations, and (3) boosting “urban mining” by extracting critical minerals from e-waste. Speaking at a FICCI event in New Delhi, Satija highlighted the growing potential of e-waste recovery given India’s rising digital penetration. He also stressed the importance of skills training in collection and recovery. India launched the National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM) in January 2025 with a ₹16,300 crore budget and plans for ₹18,000 crore in PSU investments, aiming to cut reliance on Chinese supply.
