[SMMS Stainless Steel Daily Review: Macro Factors Drive SS Futures to Stop Falling and Rebound, Spot Stainless Steel Follows Suit] SMM reported on August 25 that the SS futures showed a trend of stopping the decline and rebounding. Influenced by the dovish expectations for the US Fed, the overall futures strengthened, with SS futures fluctuating upward during the day, reaching a high point above 12,900 yuan/mt. In the spot market, driven by the rebound in futures, the bullish sentiment in the spot market recovered, and traders' quotations strengthened again. With stronger expectations, inquiries were good during the day, and trading conditions also improved WoW. For futures, the most-traded contract 2510 fluctuated upward. At 10:30 am, SS2510 was quoted at 12,830 yuan/mt, up 85 yuan/mt from the previous trading day. The spot premiums/discounts for 304/2B in Wuxi ranged between 340-490 yuan/mt. In the spot market, 201/2B cold-rolled coils in Wuxi were quoted at 8,050 yuan/mt; 304/2B cold-rolled edge coils averaged 13,075 yuan/mt in Wuxi and 13,050 yuan/mt in Foshan; 316L/2B cold-rolled coils were 25,625 yuan/mt in both Wuxi and Foshan; 316L/NO.1 hot-rolled coils were 24,950 yuan/mt in both locations; 430/2B cold-rolled coils in both Wuxi and Foshan were 7,400 yuan/mt. Last week, SS futures continued to fall, completely erasing the gains made within the month, basically pulling back to the level at the end of July, with the low point even dropping to the key level of 12,700 yuan/mt. On August 25, SMM reported that the SS futures showed a trend of stopping falling and rebounding. Affected by expectations for a dovish US Fed, the futures market strengthened overall, and the SS futures were driven to fluctuate upward throughout the day, with the high point once breaking through the 12,900 yuan/mt mark. In the spot market, driven by the rebound in the futures market, the bullish sentiment in the spot market recovered, and traders' quotations strengthened again. Under the influence of strong expectations, inquiries were good during the day, and the transaction volume also showed a WoW increase.

In the futures market, the most-traded 2510 contract fluctuated upward. At 10:30 AM, SS2510 was quoted at 12,830 yuan/mt, up 85 yuan/mt from the previous trading day. The spot premiums/discounts for 304/2B in Wuxi ranged from 340-490 yuan/mt. In the spot market, the average price of cold-rolled 201/2B coils in Wuxi was reported at 8,050 yuan/mt; cold-rolled 304/2B coils with trimmed edges had an average price of 13,075 yuan/mt in Wuxi and 13,050 yuan/mt in Foshan; cold-rolled 316L/2B coils were priced at 25,625 yuan/mt in Wuxi and the same in Foshan; hot-rolled 316L/NO.1 coils were quoted at 24,950 yuan/mt in both regions; cold-rolled 430/2B coils were priced at 7,400 yuan/mt in both Wuxi and Foshan.

Last week, the SS futures market continued to decline, fully erasing the gains made during the month and basically pulling back to the level seen at month-end July, with the low point even falling to the critical mark of 12,700 yuan/mt. Affected by this, the spot market also weakened simultaneously. The downstream market had low acceptance of the previously high prices, coupled with a significant correction in the futures market and traders adopting price-cutting measures under selling pressure, leading to a pullback in spot quotations. However, even with the price reductions, the transaction volume failed to improve effectively, as the market generally exhibited a "rush to buy amid continuous price rise and hold back amid price downturn" mentality, resulting in a stronger wait-and-see sentiment among downstream players and a further deterioration in transaction conditions. However, with the traditional peak consumption season of the "September-October peak season" gradually approaching and stainless steel mills implementing slight production cuts, the actual production schedule may fall slightly short of expectations. Recently, the social inventory of stainless steel has declined for seven consecutive weeks. Coupled with increases in the prices of raw materials such as nickel and chromium, as well as heightened expectations for US Fed interest rate cuts and the boost from the national "anti-rat race" competition policy, this week, stainless steel prices have stopped falling and rebounded.

[Flash | Chile's July Imacec Falls 1.5% YoY, Steepest Monthly Drop Since 2022 as Mining Slumps 9.3%]
Chile's central bank reported on September 1 that the July Imacec economic activity index fell 1.5% year-on-year on an unadjusted basis. On a seasonally adjusted basis, the index fell 2.1% year-on-year and 1.7% month-on-month, marking the steepest monthly decline since 2022. The bank attributed the drop mainly to mining, which fell a significant 9.3%, primarily due to weather conditions, followed by lower ore grades and equipment maintenance that disrupted normal production operations. Many of the affected mines are copper-molybdenum associated deposits. Since molybdenum concentrate is recovered as a byproduct of the flotation process used to treat copper sulfide ore, the disruption to processing plants also curtailed molybdenum output.

Rigid Supply Constraints Intensify Molybdenum Market Tug‑of‑War in Early September 【SMM Molybdenum Analysis】
【SMM Molybdenum Analysis 】 SMM News on September 3: In August, China’s molybdenum market maintained a tight balance characterized by relatively tight supply and support from rigid demand. Overall prices rose first and then stabilized, consolidating at highs. 45% molybdenum concentrates shot up to 5,455 yuan/mtu during August 19–25, remaining firmly in the three-year high range; this simultaneously drove spot 60% ferromolybdenum to rise, reaching a phased high of 344,000 yuan/mt on August 24–25.

[Flash | Chile's Mining Production Index Falls 7.2% YoY in July; Metallic Mining Down 10.7%]
On August 31, Chile's National Statistics Institute (INE) reported that the country's industrial production index fell 5.1% year-on-year in July. Within that, the mining production index (IPMin) declined 7.2%, with metallic mining down 10.7%, subtracting 9.301 percentage points from the index, mainly on lower copper extraction and processing. USGS data show Chile accounted for roughly 16% of global molybdenum output in 2025. The recent output losses at Chile's copper-molybdenum mines have been concentrated at the beneficiation stage, which hits by-product molybdenum harder than copper; global molybdenum supply is therefore expected to feel the impact in 2026.
