【SMM Nickel Flash News】Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment has revoked nickel mining permits on Pulau Kabaena in Southeast Sulawesi and Pulau Gebe in North Maluku, citing strong community opposition and ecological risks. The move, which follows earlier restrictions in Raja Ampat, reflects a broader policy to halt or limit mining on small islands, including projects under state-owned firms. Officials said future approvals will require more comprehensive environmental assessments, acknowledging that mining inevitably alters fragile island ecosystems. Due to the uncertainty over which mining permits (IUPs) are affected, SMM will provide updates as further information becomes available.
