[Ghana Cancels $1.2 Billion Bauxite Lease, Seeks New Foreign Partner]

Published: Jul 30, 2025 00:17

The Government of Ghana has cancelled a $1.2 billion bauxite mining lease previously held by local firm Rocksure International. The decision affects the Nyinahin Hills deposit, estimated to hold 376 million tons of bauxite, and marks a strategic pivot as the government seeks to partner with a major foreign company to develop the site.

The lease, part of a joint venture with the Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC), was voided due to lack of parliamentary ratification, as required by a 2019 Supreme Court ruling. Rocksure held a 70% stake in the venture, with GIADEC and the state owning 20% and 10%, respectively.

Now, Ghana is reportedly in advanced talks with potential partners, including Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) and unnamed Chinese firms. EGA, which signed an MoU with GIADEC in June, confirmed its interest but stated no binding deal has been reached. Ghana aims to begin mining at the Nyinahin Block B site in early 2026, with discussions ongoing.

[SMM Aluminum Alloy Daily Review] ADC12 market quotes were broadly raised today, with SMM ADC12 prices up 200 yuan/mt from the previous day. The upward adjustments were mainly driven by stronger aluminum prices and futures, higher raw material costs, and improved market sentiment. The cost side is now providing stronger support for ADC12 prices, and enterprises, facing cost pressure and a firmer market, have shown a greater willingness to repair prices upward. Meanwhile, some enterprises hold certain expectations for a recovery in end-use demand going forward. Attention should still be paid to the recovery of end-user orders and further changes in aluminum prices and raw material costs.
