BHP sold its stake in a $1.4 billion nickel project in Tanzania at a loss, as the company sought to cut expenses amid declining profits and dividends. In 2022, BHP invested $100 million (approximately A$153 million) to acquire a 17% stake in the Kabanga nickel project. The company originally believed that this $942 million development project had the potential to become one of the world's lowest-cost nickel producers, with the advantage of lower carbon emissions compared to most nickel mines during operations.
