Bougainville Copper Loses Panguna Licence as Redevelopment Plans Move Forward
Bougainville Copper Ltd. has lost its exploration licence for the Panguna copper-gold project in Papua New Guinea’s Autonomous Region of Bougainville after local authorities revoked the permit. A new 25-year mining licence has been granted to Bougainville Minerals Ltd., a company controlled by the Autonomous Bougainville Government and local landowners. Panguna is one of the world's largest undeveloped copper-gold deposits, containing an estimated 5.3 million tonnes of copper and 19.3 million ounces of gold. The licence transfer could significantly influence the future development pathway of the project while highlighting the growing role of local stakeholders and resource ownership issues in major mining developments.
