Factorial Energy has achieved a significant breakthrough in the development of large-scale solid-state battery cells using FEST (Factorial Electrolyte System Technology). These battery cells have an energy density of 375Wh/kg, can charge from 15% to 90% in just 18 minutes, and operate steadily within a temperature range of -30°C to 45°C.

SMM July 10 News:

Factorial Energy, a US-based solid-state battery startup, and global automotive giant Stellantis recently announced a major breakthrough in their jointly developed large-scale solid-state battery cell using FEST (Factorial Electrolyte System Technology). The energy density of this battery cell reaches 375Wh/kg, nearly double that of traditional LFP batteries.

The battery can be charged from 15% to 90% in just 18 minutes and operates stably within a temperature range of -30°C to 45°C, challenging the traditional perception of poor lithium battery performance at low temperatures. Stellantis plans to be the first to apply this battery in its vehicles by 2026, aiming to reshape the battery market dominated by Asian companies.

The core of Factorial's breakthrough technology lies in its innovative Solstice™, a sulfide-based all-solid-state electrolyte material. Unlike the liquid electrolytes used in traditional lithium-ion batteries, this solid-state electrolyte not only enhances energy density but also significantly reduces the risk of fire. An industry expert stated that if commercialized, this technology would reshape the competitive landscape of the EV industry.

The FEST technology employs an innovative dry coating process, eliminating the use of harmful solvents and high-energy-consuming steps in traditional battery manufacturing, making production more environmentally friendly and potentially reducing costs. Factorial can produce this solid-state battery with minimal modifications to its existing lithium-ion battery production lines, indicating significant potential for large-scale production.

Factorial aims to develop a battery that is both safe and high-performance while maintaining compatibility with existing manufacturing infrastructure. Currently, the technology has successfully passed over 600 charge-discharge cycle tests, proving its stability and durability.

For consumers, this technology promises longer driving ranges, shorter charging times, and higher safety for future EVs. With current technological capabilities, an EV equipped with a 90kWh FEST battery can theoretically travel 966 kilometers, with a weight and volume reduction of approximately 30% compared to traditional lithium-ion battery packs. Stellantis invested $75 million in Factorial in 2021, with plans to launch a demonstration vehicle equipped with solid-state batteries by 2026, potentially including the highly anticipated Dodge Charger Daytona electric sports car. Stellantis hopes to gain an edge over competitors such as BYD, Tesla, and CATL through this innovation, breaking the long-held market dominance of Asian battery giants.

SMM Analysis:
Although solid-state batteries offer excellent performance, enhanced safety, and higher energy density, they still face numerous challenges in transitioning from technical validation to large-scale commercialization. Currently, the global solid-state battery sector is highly competitive. As a startup, Factorial may still need time to catch up with industry giants like Toyota, CATL, and BYD, even if it possesses their capabilities.

Cost Push or Supply-Demand Restructuring?—The Real Logic Behind Iron Phosphate Price Increases in April
Iron phosphate negotiations in April were deadlocked, with offers hitting 13,000 yuan/mt. The price surge appeared raw-material driven, but in fact reflected pricing power shifting upstream after a reversal in supply-demand fundamentals. Downstream buyers cited “cost increases” to push back, yet conveniently forgot the upstream losses quietly absorbed over the past three years. This was never about simple cost pass-through—it was a restructuring of profit distribution across the chain.

Solid-State Battery Price Transmission and Commercialization Resonance
This week solid-state battery material prices showed structural divergence: sulphide-route LPSC and lithium sulphide prices declined, while oxides remained stable. On the industrial side, the Taiblue–Yadea two-wheeler semi-solid-state battery achieved commercial rollout; BTR’s solid electrolyte orders surged; and WELION New Energy’s 2 billion yuan project was sited in Huadu, Guangzhou. Upstream price cuts resonated with downstream deployment, accelerating the commercialisation process.
