[New Regulations on RKAB Quota?] During today’s meeting with the People’s Representative Council (Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat, DPR), Mining Minister Bahlil Lahadalia announced a proposal to reduce the period of mining quotas from three years to one year. This adjustment is intended to improve the government’s ability to regulate production levels and align them with market demand. Minister Bahlil elaborated that the existing three-year RKAB (Rencana Kerja dan Anggaran Biaya) mining quota system has posed challenges in maintaining balanced production across key mineral commodities, particularly coal, nickel, and bauxite, which led the global price to decrease. The proposed shift to annual quotas is expected to enhance oversight, stabilize commodity prices, optimize government revenue, and ensure sustainable profitability for mining operators. The initiative underscores the government’s efforts to strengthen governance in the mining sector while addressing economic and regulatory concerns. SMM will continue to monitor the development of these regulations.
