Panamanian government: Over 33,000 mt of copper concentrates have been shipped out from the closed Cobre Panama copper mine

Published: Jul 1, 2025 09:46

According to MINING.COM, citing Reuters, Panama's Ministry of Trade and Industry stated on Monday that over 33,000 metric tons of copper concentrates had been shipped out from First Quantum's closed Cobre Panama mine. The ministry said that the extraction process of copper concentrates was "gradual," but did not specify how much more concentrate would be shipped out. First Quantum declined to comment on the matter.

At the end of 2023, when the Panamanian government ordered the closure of the mine due to public protests over environmental concerns, approximately 120,000 metric tons of copper concentrates were left behind at the mine site.

In March this year, First Quantum said it had agreed to terminate arbitration proceedings related to the mine, paving the way for renewed negotiations with the government of Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino.

[Flash | Chile's July Imacec Falls 1.5% YoY, Steepest Monthly Drop Since 2022 as Mining Slumps 9.3%]
Chile's central bank reported on September 1 that the July Imacec economic activity index fell 1.5% year-on-year on an unadjusted basis. On a seasonally adjusted basis, the index fell 2.1% year-on-year and 1.7% month-on-month, marking the steepest monthly decline since 2022. The bank attributed the drop mainly to mining, which fell a significant 9.3%, primarily due to weather conditions, followed by lower ore grades and equipment maintenance that disrupted normal production operations. Many of the affected mines are copper-molybdenum associated deposits. Since molybdenum concentrate is recovered as a byproduct of the flotation process used to treat copper sulfide ore, the disruption to processing plants also curtailed molybdenum output.

Anax Launches Whim Creek Heap-Leach Feasibility Study After Copper Recoveries Reach 77–80%
Anax Metals has launched a heap-leach feasibility study at its Whim Creek copper-zinc project in Western Australia, assessing a second processing route alongside its planned concentrator. Recent CSIRO column tests achieved 77–80% copper extraction and more than 90% zinc extraction from lower-grade ores. The study, targeted for completion in Q1 2027, will evaluate the potential production and marketing of copper cathode from the existing permitted heap-leach and SX-EW infrastructure.
