Recently, the Tashkent Green Hydrogen Project in Uzbekistan, the first green hydrogen EPC project in Central Asia contracted and constructed by East China Engineering Corporation (ECEC), officially entered the hydrogen production phase, laying a solid foundation for its full-scale operation.
The Tashkent Green Hydrogen Project in Uzbekistan is ACWA Power's first independently developed green hydrogen project globally, PowerChina's first overseas green hydrogen EPC project, and a core component of the Uzbek government's "Green Energy Strategy". The project comprises two parts: a 52MW wind power plant and a 20MW green hydrogen facility. The 52MW wind power plant achieved full-capacity power generation in mid-May.
The core hydrogen production facilities of the project are located within the MAXAM Chemical Plant in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan. They adopt internationally leading alkaline electrolysis technology for hydrogen production, with a total installed capacity of 20MW across four electrolyzer systems. The design maximum capacity is 4,000 standard cubic meters per hour of high-purity hydrogen. Upon completion, the project will produce over 3,000 mt of green hydrogen annually, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 30,000 tons per year compared to the previous gray hydrogen production mode, providing a clean and stable new-type energy solution for the upgrading of the local industrial system.
On the same day, the project's four alkaline electrolyzers successively completed a series of start-up tests, including system energization, electrolyzer current increase, gas separation and purity detection, venting test, and emergency shutdown test. The main process system and auxiliary system operated smoothly, successfully producing hydrogen with a purity of 99.99%. All four electrolyzers were successfully started up in sequence and reached their designed full-load operation, with all systems in the plant functioning normally. The achievement of key hydrogen production periods fully validated the technical feasibility and operational reliability of the overall hydrogen production system. During the construction of the core hydrogen production process system, the project team integrated industry-leading electrolysis technology for hydrogen production and optimized it based on the local resource characteristics of Uzbekistan to ensure efficient and stable system operation.
Mohammad Abunayyan, Chairman of the project owner, highly praised the project construction, stating, "This project is not only a successful example of cooperation between ACWA Power and PowerChina but also a significant milestone in the global green hydrogen industry. The project team demonstrated strong professional capabilities and enforcement under complex conditions, truly reflecting the deepened cooperation between China and Uzbekistan in the new energy sector."
