The Trump administration announced an updated policy to accelerate the exploration and development of offshore critical minerals. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) and the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) in the US will streamline processes to reduce delays, enhance coordination, and provide certainty for the industry—part of a broader initiative by the US to reduce its reliance on China's dominant supply chains. These adjustments are based on an executive order issued in April aimed at promoting deep-sea mining of minerals such as nickel and copper. The order includes extending the duration of early exploration permits from three years to five years and adopting expedited environmental assessment procedures where appropriate.
