Singapore-based clean energy supplier Proteus Energy announced on June 18 that it has partnered with hydrogen fuel cell company Symbio France to launch the Proteus® Maritime Fuel Cell Solution, a modular hydrogen fuel system designed specifically for ports and vessels, marking a new breakthrough in the application of clean energy in the maritime sector.
The first product, the Proteus®75, features a single fuel cell stack with an output power of 75 kW, which can be combined to meet larger power demands. The target vessel types include harbor craft, coastal vessels, offshore support vessels, and inland waterway vessels. This technology originates from Symbio, a world-leading hydrogen fuel cell enterprise with over 30 years of history, jointly owned by global industrial groups such as Michelin, Stellantis, and Forvia.
Notably, the Proteus® Maritime Fuel Cell Solution comes with a two-year performance guarantee provided by Symbio France. Symbio's systems have been validated through millions of kilometers of driving in European cars, buses, and commercial trucks. When applied in the maritime sector, they have been enhanced with additional protection for offshore operating conditions. Its fuel cell stacks are produced at Symbio's megafactory in Lyon, France, using robotic assembly systems, with an annual capacity of thousands of units, ensuring quality while meeting the growing market demand.
In addition to the core fuel cell system, Proteus has also collaborated with Forvia, a global leader in parts and technology, to develop high-pressure hydrogen storage tanks. These tanks have obtained DNV type approval and have been delivered, with subsequent mass production planned to provide safe and convenient hydrogen storage solutions for vessels. Meanwhile, Proteus is working with port operators to customize refueling solutions and infrastructure.
According to the plan, the Proteus® Maritime Fuel Cell Solution is expected to commence deliveries in January 2026 and is anticipated to obtain DNV type approval by the end of this year. Cooperation channels with customers are now open.
