China's First Commercial Hydrogen Locomotive Launched

Published: Jun 26, 2025 11:55

Recently, in Liuzhi Special District, Liupanshui City, Guizhou Province, the country's first commercial hydrogen-powered locomotive was slowly started on the Guizhou Meijin Railway Dedicated Line, which was constructed by the 23rd Bureau Group of China Railway. Without the roar and black smoke of traditional diesel locomotives, this locomotive, which "runs on hydrogen," is quietly initiating a green revolution in logistics in south-west China.

The line spans a total length of 2.64 kilometers, encompassing 11 specialties including subgrade, tunnel, bridge, communication, signaling, power, and other "four-electricity" projects. With a designed annual transportation capacity of up to 8 million mt, it can efficiently transport coal, coke, hydrogen energy, and other related materials.

Liupanshui City is an important "coal capital" in south-west China. The "black imprint" of the coal industry has brought considerable pressure on local environmental protection. This hydrogen-powered railway dedicated line represents a crucial step in the regional industrial transformation and upgrading. Unlike traditional diesel locomotives, this locomotive is powered by hydrogen, achieving a dual breakthrough of "zero emissions" of pollutants and "low noise" operation, providing a new solution for green development in the railway freight sector.
