Recently, the Gopalpur Industrial Park in Odisha, eastern India, witnessed a major infrastructure breakthrough — five industrial projects, including the green ammonia plant by Hygenco Green Energies, officially broke ground. With a total investment of 205 billion Indian rupees (approximately $2.4 billion / €2.1 billion), this industrial cluster marks India's accelerated strategic deployment in green hydrogen and solar manufacturing.

Flagship Project: Capacity and Technological Endorsement of Hygenco's Green Ammonia Plant

As the core project of this groundbreaking, Hygenco's green ammonia plant involves a total investment of 40 billion Indian rupees and is expected to achieve an annual capacity of 1.1 million mt. The project builds on its 2024 collaboration framework with Denmark's Topsoe, which will provide key technology licensing. It adopts a fully green process of hydrogen production from renewable energy followed by ammonia synthesis, with output primarily targeting international markets, positioning India as a global green ammonia supply hub.

Industry Perspective: A Milestone in India's Clean Energy Transition

The launch of this project cluster coincides with India's critical phase of advancing its "National Green Hydrogen Mission." Analysts note that the technological approach of projects like Hygenco (green electricity-based hydrogen production + ammonia synthesis) aligns with India's rapidly growing renewable energy capacity, while PV manufacturing projects respond to Modi government's "self-reliance" industrial policy. As these projects gradually commence operations from 2027 to 2028, India is poised to capture 5%-8% of the global green ammonia trade and reduce its reliance on imported PV modules from China. This strategic deployment serves both India's 2070 carbon neutrality goal and its pursuit of greater influence in the global energy transition.
