Recently, the Coega Green Ammonia Project in Johannesburg-Nelson Mandela Bay has reached a new milestone, with the development phase of a 1,430-megawatt (MW) solar PV cluster receiving approval. This cluster will provide 40% of the electricity required for the green hydrogen project.
South Africa's PGM mining industry supports PGM-based PEM technology to address the intermittency of renewable energy. The Coega Green Ammonia Project, led by Thulani Gcabashe, Chairman of Hive Hydrogen South Africa, will utilize solar and wind energy to produce green ammonia, primarily for export to Europe and the Far East.
The project will commence at the Port of Ngqura, adjacent to the Coega Special Economic Zone, and is expected to achieve commercial operation in Q4 2029.
