The Third Stop of 2025 SMM Indonesia Nickel Field Trip - Chengtun Group

After the 2025 Indonesia Mining Conference & Critical Metals Conference, Wu Chenyu, SMM's Marketing Director for the Nickel Industry, and Enzo, a nickel industry analyst, led international investors on a visit to Chengtun Group for exchanges. They were warmly welcomed by the company's leadership. Through this visit, SMM and the international investors gained a deeper understanding of Chengtun Group's products, technologies, and corporate development. Meanwhile, they also developed a more profound understanding of the current market situation and existing issues in the nickel industry. They will continue to deepen cooperation with major enterprises to achieve complementary advantages and jointly promote the development of the global nickel industry.

Company Profile

Chengtun Group, founded in 1993 and headquartered in Shenzhen, has its global operations center in Chengdu. The Group focuses on the development of energy materials, including nickel, cobalt, lithium, copper, etc. Currently, Chengtun Group owns approximately 100 subsidiaries, two of which are publicly listed firms: Chengtun Mining: Founded in 1995 and headquartered in Xiamen, Fujian Province, it is listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange. The company focuses on the development and application of energy metals (copper, nickel, cobalt); Chengtun Lithium Energy: Founded in 2008 and headquartered in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, it is listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange. The company is mainly engaged in the mining, smelting, and deep processing of lithium concentrates, lithium carbonate, lithium hydroxide, and lithium chloride.

Chengtun Group has deployed three major projects in Indonesia, as follows:

1. PT. Youshan Nickel Industry Co., Ltd.

PT. Youshan Nickel Industry Co., Ltd. is located in the Weda Bay Industrial Park on the island of Central Halmahera, North Maluku Province, Indonesia. It adopts pyrometallurgy technology and operates four RKEF production lines, with an annual nickel metal equivalent output of 34,000 mt. It mainly produces nickel pig iron (NPI) and low-nickel ferro-nickel alloy, with plans to upgrade to high-nickel ferro-nickel alloy. The project's supporting facilities include a 250-MW captive power plant and a dedicated 50,000-mt-capacity wharf. The company commenced trial production in 2020 and achieved full-capacity operation in 2021, with an annual output of 279,900 mt of nickel pig iron and an average nickel grade of 14.09%, equivalent to 39,400 mt of nickel metal. Since its commissioning, it has produced approximately 40,000 mt of nickel metal annually, with stable and reliable production operations.

2. Chengtun Industrial Park

Chengtun Industrial Park, established in 2024, focuses on the production of new energy-related materials. The park has currently acquired 300 hectares of land, with a total planned area of 500 hectares.

3. PT. Chengtok Lithium Industry

PT. Chengtok Lithium Industry is located in the Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP) on the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia, covering an area of approximately 65 hectares. It mainly produces lithium hydroxide and lithium carbonate. The company is expected to have an annual production capacity of 120,000 mt of lithium compounds, including 100,000 mt of lithium hydroxide and 20,000 mt of lithium carbonate. Phase I of the project is expected to commence operations in Q2 2024, with an annual production capacity of 50,000 mt of lithium hydroxide and 10,000 mt of lithium carbonate. Currently, Phase I of the project has employed over 1,400 Indonesian staff and more than 300 Chinese staff.
