Sembcorp Utilities, a subsidiary of Sembcorp Industries, has formed an alliance with Malaysia's MY Energy Consortium and Petronas, as well as a consortium including PetroVietnam Technical Services Corporation, to assess the feasibility of exporting renewable energy from Vietnam to Singapore. Announced during the ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur on May 26, the collaboration will explore using Vietnam’s offshore wind power to generate clean electricity, transmitted via a new subsea cable through Malaysia’s national grid. This supports Singapore’s goal to import around 6 GW of low-carbon electricity by 2035—about a third of its projected energy needs—and reinforces its role as a hub for cross-border power trade to advance regional decarbonization.
