[Titan Launches First U.S. Natural Flake Graphite Processing Facility Since 1956] On May 20, Canada’s Titan Mining announced the start of construction on a fully permitted commercial demonstration facility for natural flake graphite at its Empire State Mine in St. Lawrence County, New York. This marks the first U.S.-sourced and processed natural graphite project since 1956, a significant milestone in rebuilding domestic supply chains for critical minerals. The facility will leverage existing zinc infrastructure and is designed to process 60,000 tonnes of graphite-bearing feed annually, producing 1,000–1,200 tonnes of graphite concentrate. Commissioning is targeted for H2 2025, with initial sales to U.S. defense and industrial customers expected in early 2026. Subject to demand, Titan aims to expand capacity to 40,000 tonnes per year, enough to satisfy the majority of U.S. natural flake graphite demand. The project is backed by financing and workforce support from the St. Lawrence County Industrial Development Agency and the Development Authority of the North Country. Titan has committed to maintaining 135 full-time jobs and creating five new positions. An economic assessment (PEA) for the Kilbourne graphite project is expected in H2 2025. Titan sees this development as a critical step toward becoming a leading U.S. supplier of natural graphite, supporting national energy security and critical mineral independence.
