General Motors and LG Energy are planning to begin production of lithium manganese-rich (LMR) prismatic battery cells by 2028, aiming to power electric trucks and full-size SUVs. These batteries, developed over a decade, feature a new chemistry that significantly reduces cobalt content by using a composition of approximately 65% manganese and 35% nickel. This contrasts with GM’s current NMCA batteries, which rely heavily on expensive cobalt and nickel. LMR batteries promise a 33% higher energy density than leading lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells, while maintaining similar costs, potentially making EVs more affordable and efficient.
