General Motors (GM) and LG Energy Solution are expected to commence production of lithium-rich manganese (LMR) prismatic batteries in 2028, intended for use in electric trucks and full-size SUVs. These batteries, developed over a decade, feature a new chemical formulation that significantly reduces cobalt content, with a composition of approximately 65% manganese and 35% nickel, in stark contrast to GM's current NMCA batteries (approximately 85% nickel, 10% manganese, and 5% cobalt). Compared to mainstream lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, LMR batteries offer a 33% increase in energy density at a comparable cost, promising to enhance the efficiency of electric vehicles (EVs) and reduce their selling prices.
