SMM May 13 News:

I. Technological Breakthroughs and Market Positioning

On May 8, 2025, Huzhou Yingna New Energy's 10,000 mt-scale production line for composite sodium iron phosphate (NFPP) cathode materials commenced operation, marking a new phase in the commercialization of sodium-ion batteries. The NFPP material, through its unique three-dimensional framework structure, has achieved performance breakthroughs including a cycle life exceeding 6,000 cycles, a capacity retention rate of 90% at -40°C, and a thermal runaway temperature exceeding 300°C, while significantly reducing costs compared to traditional layered oxides. Yingna has addressed conductivity challenges through nano-carbon coating technology, with the third-generation product achieving a compaction density of up to 2.3 g/cm³ and a capacity increase to 110 mAh/g. It has secured bulk orders from enterprises such as Chilwee and Sunwoda, and completed cooperation agreements with 12 enterprises at the production line launch ceremony. Costs are expected to continue declining after the 10,000 mt production line becomes operational.

II. Market Status and Competitive Landscape

The current sodium-ion battery cathode material market exhibits a dual-route pattern of "layered oxides and polyanions coexisting." In 2024, layered oxides dominated the market share but faced issues such as poor high-temperature stability and reliance on nickel resources. The polyanion route, leveraging its abundant resources and high safety, is gradually gaining rapid penetration in the ESS sector in 2025.

Comparison of Technological Routes:

Layered Oxides: Energy density can reach 160 Wh/kg, but typically has a cycle life of 3,000 cycles and a 30% capacity decay at -20°C. Safety is slightly inferior to that of polyanions.

NFPP Polyanion: Cycle life exceeds 8,000 cycles, with a capacity retention rate of 90% at -40°C, and can pass the nail penetration test.

III. Commercialization Progress and Application Scenarios

1. ESS Sector: The 2.3 MWh NFPP energy storage system developed through collaboration between Sodium Innovation Energy and BYD has achieved a charge-discharge efficiency of 91.36%, operates stably with two charges and two discharges per day, and has accumulated over 180,000 KWh of discharged energy, validating the feasibility of industrial-scale applications.

2. Low-Speed Transportation: Yadea and AIMA have launched NFPP sodium-ion battery-powered two-wheelers with a capacity retention rate exceeding 90% at -20°C and a cycle life of 1,500 cycles. The 72V20Ah battery pack developed through collaboration between Yingna and Chilwee has an energy density of 122 Wh/kg and has been delivered.

3. High-End Applications: The BLUETTI NA300 household ESS can still operate at -25°C, with a designed lifespan of 12 years; Puna Energy's ground service vehicle energy storage system, developed in collaboration with Shanghai Airport, has addressed the issue of lithium battery capacity decay at low temperatures.

IV. Future Trends and Industry Challenges

Technological Iteration Directions:

Material Modification: Through vanadium and nickel doping and nano-design, the capacity of NFPP is expected to increase to 130 mAh/g, with a compaction density exceeding 2.5 g/cm³.

Process Innovation: The "spray drying + freeze drying" process controls the proportion of impurity phases within 3%, and the yield rate is increased to 95%.

System Integration: BYD plans to launch full-tab structured NFPP battery cells in 2025, reducing internal resistance by 70% and supporting high C-rate discharge at 45C.

Challenges and Solutions:

Energy Density and Battery Cell Cost: Currently, the price per ton of NFPP has not yet reached the ideal expected price, and its energy density is relatively low. More casing is required per watt-hour, increasing costs. The cost per watt-hour ranges from 0.5 to 0.6 yuan, and in some cases, it even exceeds 0.6 yuan. NFPP battery cells are less competitive than LFP in terms of price.

Capital Support and Profitability Targets: In recent years, sodium-ion battery enterprises have gained favour from capital, with many companies having completed financing rounds. However, sodium-ion batteries have not yet fully achieved significant market penetration. Whether capital can continue to support them in the long term remains to be seen. Therefore, sodium-ion battery enterprises still face the challenge of achieving profitability targets.

V. Policy-Driven and Industrial Ecosystem

The "Action Plan for High-Quality Development of the New-Type Energy Storage Manufacturing Industry" explicitly supports the development of sodium-ion batteries. In terms of industry standards, the NFPP group standard will be released in Q3 2025, clearly defining indicators such as impurity phase content and compaction density for the first time. In the international market, NFPP, with its wide temperature range characteristics (-40°C to 80°C), may have application opportunities in high-temperature regions of the Middle East and extremely cold regions of Northern Europe.

VI. Outlook

The commissioning of Huzhou Yingna's 10,000-mt-scale NFPP production line marks an important milestone in the development of the polyanion route for sodium-ion batteries. With policy support and cost reductions, NFPP is expected to become an important route for energy storage, start-stop power supplies, and low-speed vehicles within five years. In the future, breakthroughs are needed in conductivity optimization, standard establishment, and international expansion to build a full-chain ecosystem spanning materials, battery cells, and systems.

[SMM Cobalt-Lithium Morning Meeting Summary] Supply-demand expectations diverge, material prices under pressure, industry chain prosperity diverges
Industry chain prices were generally under pressure this week, with supply and demand diverging across segments. The lithium market was hit by expectations of ample future supply, dragging the average battery-grade lithium carbonate price down to 104,400 yuan/mt, a weekly decline of 14.7%. Spot destocking and a stronger basis still provided some support, but salt plant inventories edged higher. Cobalt and nickel demand recovery remained insufficient, with cautious procurement keeping salt prices on a downtrend. Ternary cathode materials and LCO faced dual pressure from falling costs and weak orders. LFP supply and demand were stable, with prices easing alongside raw materials. Artificial graphite found relatively strong cost support, separator inventories were low with tightening supply-demand conditions, and electrolyte prices held steady. Sodium-ion battery orders grew and capacity releases accelerated, but profitability recovery lagged, leaving commercialization still constrained by economics. In the recycling market, black mass prices and procurement coefficients moved lower, strengthening buyer bargaining power. Competition intensified in end-user energy storage project bidding, with Jieyang project candidate quotes concentrated at 0.8–0.82 Yuan/Wh. Going forward, attention should focus on ore-side production resumptions, production schedule fulfillment, and actual restocking; industry chain stabilization still hinges on demand improvement.

[SMM Cobalt Morning Meeting Summary] Weak Demand and Falling Costs Keep Industry Chain Prices Under Pressure and Hitting Bottom
The industry chain remained weak this week, with insufficient demand and lower costs jointly weighing on prices. Refined cobalt fell below 250,000 yuan/mt, and smelter quotes may see further downward adjustments. Intermediate product trading stalled, with buyers and sellers staying on the sidelines. The cobalt sulphate market shifted to a buyer-dominated phase, with downstream target prices dropping to 46,000-48,000 yuan/mt, while high inventory costs kept price disagreements unresolved. Cobalt chloride and Co3O4 saw production cuts and destocking, with new purchases insufficient. Cobalt powder quotes fell to 330,000-340,000 yuan/mt, and cemented carbide demand recovered slowly. Ternary cathode precursor prices weakened, with export orders moderate and domestic demand diverging. Ternary cathode material was dragged down by falling raw material prices and order reductions, with October production schedules expected to remain flat MoM. LCO cost support weakened, end-user restocking was cautious, and prices still had downside. Overall, just-in-time procurement was unlikely to reverse the weakness, and stabilization would still require actual order improvement. In news, September EV and ESS battery sales rose 52% YoY, with new progress in corporate earnings and overseas project construction.
