Myanmar Earthquake of 7.9 Magnitude: No Immediate Impact on Rare Earth Ore Supply

Published: Mar 28, 2025 17:23
At 14:20 on March 28, a 7.9-magnitude earthquake occurred in Myanmar (21.85 degrees north latitude, 95.95 degrees east longitude) with a focal depth of 30 kilometers. Previously, the Kachin region had already permitted the legal mining and import of long-stocked rare earth ore from the Longchuan area, and there is no news yet about newly produced rare earth ore. According to feedback from mine owners in the Longchuan area, the epicenter of this earthquake was relatively far away and has not affected normal road transportation, and it is expected that there will be no new impact on the supply of Myanmar ore. SMM will continue to monitor the subsequent market situation of Myanmar ore.

[SMM Rare Earth Daily Review: Pr-Nd Quotations Raised in the Rare Earth Market, Trading at a Stalemate with Strong Wait-and-See Sentiment] Overall, the rare earth market has entered a phase of differentiated adjustments, with price trends and market trading activity diverging in tandem. Pr-Nd quotations were raised, but downstream inquiries and purchases remained cautious, with limited actual transaction volume, leaving the buy-sell stalemate unbroken. Within medium-heavy rare earths, trading also showed divergence, as dysprosium and terbium metals saw slight price concessions to facilitate shipments amid resistance to high-priced deals, with an overall strong wait-and-see atmosphere in the market. In the short term, the price trend of Pr-Nd products still needs to be observed in light of market trading conditions, but with upstream willingness to hold prices firm strengthening, prices may drift higher.
