[Rio Tinto and Edify Energy Sign Solar and ESS Agreement to Support Low-Carbon Transition in Aluminum Industry]

On March 12, 2025, Rio Tinto and Edify Energy signed an agreement under which Rio Tinto is expected to purchase 90% of the power and ESS capacity from the Smoky Creek and Guthrie’s Gap power stations over the next 20 years. The two stations have a total installed capacity of 600 MWac solar power and 600 MW/2,400 MWh ESS, with construction expected to begin by the end of 2025 and completion anticipated in 2028.

This project enables Rio Tinto to secure 2.7 GW of renewable energy in Queensland, which is expected to meet 80% of the power demand for the Boyne smelter and reduce carbon emissions by 70% (approximately 5.6 million mt). Rio Tinto holds 2,160 MWh of ESS capacity, ensuring stable power supply and enhancing power grid resilience.
