[SMM Analysis] Weekly Market Update on Ternary Cathode Material

Published: Feb 27, 2025 15:42
At the beginning of the week, the prices of 5-series and 6-series ternary cathode materials declined, mainly due to the drop in lithium carbonate prices. However, cobalt sulphate prices surged significantly later in the week as the DRC suspended cobalt exports for four months. Even though both lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide prices were falling, the rise in cobalt sulphate prices still drove up the prices of 5-series, 6-series, and 8-series ternary cathode materials.

Price Aspect: At the beginning of the week, the prices of 5-series and 6-series ternary cathode materials declined, mainly due to the drop in lithium carbonate prices. However, as the DRC suspended cobalt exports for four months, cobalt sulphate prices surged significantly later in the week. Even though both lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide prices decreased, the rise in cobalt sulphate prices still drove up the prices of 5-series, 6-series, and 8-series ternary cathode materials.

Production and Supply: The recovery of orders for ternary cathode materials in March varied. Orders for 6-series materials were relatively optimistic, while 5-series and 8-series materials might struggle to return to January levels. Many enterprises remained in a wait-and-see phase, awaiting downstream order conditions at month-end to determine future production plans. Meanwhile, overseas demand for ternary cathode materials showed limited growth compared to pre-holiday levels, maintaining a relatively stable demand scale, leading to weak production schedule growth expectations for some enterprises primarily supplying overseas markets. Overall, the concentration of orders among top-tier enterprises further strengthened in March, with intense market competition and resources and orders increasingly concentrated among leading companies.

SMM Daily Review: Lithium Carbonate Spot Prices Drifted Lower on September 2
Today, SMM battery-grade lithium carbonate spot prices drifted lower compared with the previous trading day. The lithium carbonate 2701 contract opened lower at 157,000 yuan/mt today, then fluctuated downward after the open. In the morning session, it traded weakly around the 156,000-157,000 yuan range, with an intraday high of 157,800 yuan/mt. Near midday, it quickly dropped to 153,200 yuan/mt, hitting a new intraday low. Around midday, prices seesawed repeatedly in the 154,000-156,000 yuan range. In the afternoon, bulls briefly pushed prices up but failed to break above the average price line. Prices weakened again in late trading, eventually closing down 3.2% at 154,800 yuan/mt, with open interest falling by 9,123 lots. In the spot market, downstream buyers purchased on dips as needed. At 155,000 yuan/mt and below, downstream spot order purchase willingness continued to recover. On the supply side, as prices drifted lower, willingness to sell spot orders remained weak, with some lithium chemical plants holding prices firm and holding back from selling. Overall, market inquiries and actual transactions were relatively active.

Battery-Grade Lithium Sulfide: Will Q4 See a Spike?
Key takeaway upfront: A Q4 spike is unlikely, but we do expect continued moderate growth. Monthly output is likely to settle in the 9–10 tonne range – a modest step-up from Q3, not an explosive leap.
