[Trump: Stop Minting 1¢ Coins, Also Considering Halting 5¢ Coins] For a long time, 1¢ coins have been primarily made of zinc, with 97% of their composition being zinc and a copper-nickel coating on the surface to give them their signature color. However, the current cost of producing a 1¢ coin is $0.037, an increase of $0.006 from the previous year. Meanwhile, 5¢ coins are made from an alloy of 75% copper and 25% nickel. Currently, the US Mint is also incurring losses on minting 5¢ coins—the manufacturing cost of each 5¢ coin is nearly $0.14.
