[SMM Data] December Electrolyte Production Down MoM, Output Expected to Continue Declining Next Month

Published: Jan 3, 2025 17:54
[SMM Data: Electrolyte Production Data for December] Electrolyte production in December 2024 was down 5% MoM, with a projected decline of 9% in January.

In December 2024, China's electrolyte production decreased by 5% MoM but was up 124% YoY. The growth rate of end-use market demand slowed down, leading to an overall decline in demand. The operating rate of electrolyte factories showed a certain decrease compared to the previous month. After an initial price increase of LiPF6 at the beginning of the month, prices stabilized, prompting some electrolyte enterprises to adopt a wait-and-see approach, waiting for raw material prices to stabilize. Overall, the willingness to stockpile raw materials was weak, and most orders were produced based on orders. Meanwhile, the operating rate of battery cell enterprises began to decline compared to November, prompting electrolyte factories to moderately reduce their operating rates in response to market demand, resulting in a decrease in production.

Looking ahead to January, end-use demand is expected to continue declining, and electrolyte demand is also expected to decrease to some extent. China's electrolyte production in January is expected to decrease by approximately 9% MoM and increase by about 98% YoY.

SMM Daily Review: Lithium Carbonate Spot Prices Drifted Lower on September 2
Today, SMM battery-grade lithium carbonate spot prices drifted lower compared with the previous trading day. The lithium carbonate 2701 contract opened lower at 157,000 yuan/mt today, then fluctuated downward after the open. In the morning session, it traded weakly around the 156,000-157,000 yuan range, with an intraday high of 157,800 yuan/mt. Near midday, it quickly dropped to 153,200 yuan/mt, hitting a new intraday low. Around midday, prices seesawed repeatedly in the 154,000-156,000 yuan range. In the afternoon, bulls briefly pushed prices up but failed to break above the average price line. Prices weakened again in late trading, eventually closing down 3.2% at 154,800 yuan/mt, with open interest falling by 9,123 lots. In the spot market, downstream buyers purchased on dips as needed. At 155,000 yuan/mt and below, downstream spot order purchase willingness continued to recover. On the supply side, as prices drifted lower, willingness to sell spot orders remained weak, with some lithium chemical plants holding prices firm and holding back from selling. Overall, market inquiries and actual transactions were relatively active.

Battery-Grade Lithium Sulfide: Will Q4 See a Spike?
Key takeaway upfront: A Q4 spike is unlikely, but we do expect continued moderate growth. Monthly output is likely to settle in the 9–10 tonne range – a modest step-up from Q3, not an explosive leap.
