Shanghai (Gasgoo)- On October 24, SAIC General Motors ("SAIC-GM"), the joint venture between SAIC Motor and General Motors, announced its latest generation of plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV)-dedicated system is officially named the "True Dragon" ("Zhenlong" in Chinese Pinyin).

According to the automaker, the True Dragon system introduces an innovative dual-motor layout with P1 and P3 series-parallel configurations, reaching a high power density of 3.35 kW/kg at the assembly level. Through a dual-motor control integration technology, it minimizes idle and drag losses, setting a new benchmark in efficiency while maintaining strong performance.

At the heart of the system is a high-speed, flat-wire motor optimized through an AI-driven ultra-dimensional tuning design. Featuring SAIC-GM's proprietary CoolGRID™ precision thermal management technology, this motor achieves a peak torque density exceeding 14.4 Nm/kg and a power density over 7.8 kW/kg—surpassing industry averages by 30%. The motor's design, incorporating ultra-thin, low-loss silicon steel sheets, also enables a peak efficiency rate of 97.8%.

The True Dragon system utilizes a double-sided water-cooled IGBT module to maximize cooling and integration efficiency, delivering a 40 kW/L power density for PHEV inverters, with peak efficiency reaching 98.7%.

Its transmission technology combines direct-drive hydraulic control with a high-precision clutch valve for quick, precise shifting. With all-time intelligent speed adjustment and torque compensation, the system ensures seamless power flow.

The carmaker added the new PHEV-dedicated system is powered by SAIC-GM's latest 1.5T Ecotec hybrid engine, which has evolved through eight generations. Employing efficient technologies like deep Miller cycle, high compression ratios, and high-tumble intake channels, it achieves an 11% improvement in fuel efficiency while delivering a maximum power output of 132 kW and up to 88 kW/L of power density. The engine also allows for custom tuning to meet the diverse fuel-saving and performance requirements across vehicle models.

Furthermore, the battery system adheres to the same rigorous development standards as that of the Ultium platform, featuring a specially designed cell with advanced carbon coating technology. This design supports fast charging across its lifecycle without lithium plating, enhancing both durability and safety.
