On May 23rd, The price of SMM battery grade nickel sulfate index is 32389 yuan/ton, an increase of 189 yuan/ton compared to the previous working day. The price of battery grade nickel sulfate is 32000-32500 yuan/ton, an average increase of 100 yuan/ton compared to the previous working day. The supply of nickel salts is limited by the current situation and expectations of raw materials, and finished product inventory remains at a low level. The combination of high raw material coefficients and high nickel prices has driven up raw material costs, forcing salt factories to deepen their profit inversion and triggering strong price hikes. Although the demand has weakened somewhat, it is constrained by the difficulties in building warehouses for some precursor factories in the early stage, and the temporary replenishment demand caused by order increments has forced downstream to accept high priced nickel salts. Therefore, nickel salt prices have rebounded. However, due to the high opening of nickel prices on Monday, the extent of profit recovery for salt plants is limited.

India's Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) issued a notification on September 22, confirming the central government's approval to extend the anti-dumping investigation deadline on stainless steel cold-rolled flat products originating in or exported from China, Indonesia, and Vietnam by six months, from September 28, 2026 to March 28, 2027. The extension maintains the original product scope covering 300 and 400 series coils, strips, sheets, plates, and circles, without issuing any findings or preliminary duty rates. The investigation, which commenced on September 29, 2025, covers specific austenitic, ferritic, and martensitic grades, excluding hot-rolled flat products, duplex grades, and 200-series products with specific nickel content levels.

[SMM Analysis] Indonesian Production Cuts and Pre-Holiday Caution Slow the Decline in NPI Prices
Indonesian production cuts slowed the decline in NPI prices, but rising port inventories and weak stainless steel demand kept buyers cautious. The NPI discount to refined nickel widened, modestly improving the economics of conversion to high grade matte, though direct NPI sales remained more profitable.

[SMM Analysis] Downstream Demand Shows No Improvement as Nickel Intermediate Prices Diverge
MHP payables weakened amid ample supply and cautious downstream buying, while high grade nickel matte payables held steady. Despite a rebound in benchmark nickel prices, MHP’s nickel and cobalt component prices fell. Nickel intermediates are expected to remain under pressure in the near term.
