On the import, data from the General Administration of Customs showed that China imported 658,000 tons of steel in April 2024, up 41,000 tons or 6.6% from the previous month, and up 12.48% YoY.

In terms of exports, data from the General Administration of Customs showed that China exported 9.224 million tons of steel in April 2024, down 664,000 tons or 6.7% from the previous month, but up 16.29% YoY.

China's steel imports are still at a historically low level for the same period, exports remained high, and the overall net export remained unchanged.

China's cumulative steel exports in January-April still maintained rapid growth

The cumulative exports from January to April totaled 35.024 million mt, up 27.0% YoY.

According to SMM research, steel mills' export orders in April were significantly better than in March, and the profits of HRC increased significantly. Most steel mills tended to produce HRC, and the supply was sufficient. However, affected by overseas geopolitical factors, the export orders in April was lower than expected, and actual exports decreased.
