At InterBattery 2024, South Korea's largest battery industry event, South Korean battery manufacturers showcased next generation battery solutions amid competitive pressure from Chinese peers and a slowdown in the electric vehicle market.
● LGES: demonstrated the soft package CTC solution;
● SDI: solid-state battery roadmap, and 46X series;
● SK-ON: Improvement of fast charging battery.
LG Energy Solution took center stage, with a booth area of 540 square meters. A highlight of the exhibition was a demonstration of pouch CTP technology through a model resembling a car chassis, with the aim of learning how prismatic cells improve energy density and reduce battery weight and cost by eliminating module stages.
LG CEO Kim Dong-myung said that it is actively discussing cooperation with multiple automakers to promote their cell-to-pack technology.
Soft-packed CTC battery cells can directly assemble batteries into battery packs without modules, thereby reducing battery weight and cost.
SDI demonstrated its flagship next generation battery technology, all solid state batteries, and set a roadmap targeting the industry's highest energy density of 900 Wh/L, with plans to achieve mass production of all solid state batteries in 2027.
SDI expects to mass-produce 20-year-life batteries by 2029, and also launched innovative fast charging technology that can shorten charging time from 8% to 80% in just 9 minutes.
SK On will launch advanced super fast (Super Fast high nickel battery) batteries with an energy density 9% higher than traditional SF batteries while maintaining fast charging capabilities. It is expected that at the same energy density, the battery's fast charging performance is about 18% higher than that of traditional SF batteries.
SK On will also showcase lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries with improved low-temperature performance to deal with the problem of battery performance degradation in low-temperature environments. This series is named Winter Pro LFP batteries, which have a 16% increase in charge and discharge capacity at low temperatures. Energy density increased by 19%.
Key Hightlights: Korean Cell makers are are strengthening their position in the global ternary battery market and are also actively developing LFP batteries and solid-state batteries.
While under the presurre of OEM's cost reduction and CATL's price reduction annoucement, Korean cell makers' presure to reduce the cost gets greater.
Mid-nickel and hight voltage is a trend, fast charging is a need.
