Nickel sulphate prices climbed amid tight supply
The SMM battery-grade nickel sulphate index reached 28,517 yuan/mt on February 29, up 724 yuan/mt compared to February 22. Quotes of battery-grade nickel sulphate were 28,400-28,800 yuan/mt, up 800 yuan/mt from February 22. Nickel sulphate prices continued to climb last week.
Supply side, nickel salt factories are slowly restarting operations, but recovery is tempered by scarce and costly raw materials, including hydrometallurgy
cobalt intermediates products and scraps. Salt factories are keeping inventories low, continuing the tightness in spot market availability.
Demand side, the ternary cathode material industry chain is holding low inventories, enabling swift demand response. In March, with favorable prospects for domestic and international precursor orders, there's continued demand for nickel sulphate from precursor firms. Market inquiries and transactions are currently active. Amid supply constraints, regular purchasing needs have pushed nickel sulphate prices higher, with its discount coefficient to LME nickel trending up at 79-80%. Raw material costs are rising faster than those of finished products, bolstering cost-side support.
It is anticipated that nickel sulphate prices will continue to rise slightly this week, within the range of 29,000-29,500 yuan/mt.
