[SMM Analysis: AES Gets Regulatory Approval for 200MW, 4hr BESS at Soon-to-Retire Coal Plant in Indiana, US] The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC) has approved a proposed large-scale battery storage project being developed by a regional utility subsidiary of AES Corp in the United States.

The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC) has approved a proposed large-scale battery storage project being developed by a regional utility subsidiary of AES Corp in the United States.

AES Indiana said late last week (January 26) that regulators have approved a 200MW/800MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Pike County, Indiana. The stand-alone battery storage asset is expected to come online this December.

The asset is being constructed onsite at the AES Indiana Petersburg coal-fired power plant, the last coal plant in its portfolio and parent AES’ fleet.

With AES having committed to exiting coal, the 2,146MW plant’s coal-fired units will close in 2025, and AES has proposed converting the facility to natural gas in addition to developing hundreds of megawatts of wind, solar PV and batteries in the area.

The project will interconnect to the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) grid and ISO wholesale markets. AES Indiana, formerly Indianapolis Power & Light Co. (IPL), serves about 500,000 customers in Indianapolis and central Indiana, said it expects the BESS to come online for the 2024-2025 MISO winter when demand is usually at its peak.

The utility issued a request for proposals (RFP) in February 2022 seeking completed system delivery on a turnkey basis rather than a power purchase agreement (PPA) or other third-party contract. The BESS will connect to AES Indiana's transmission lines via a new substation.

Key drivers for robust BESS demand in US Midwest

In AES Indiana's recently filed 2022 Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), the company identified that by 2027, its portfolio will increase by 1,300MW of wind, solar PV and battery storage, up from around 400MW today.

The utility has come under criticism for choosing to replace part of its coal generation capacity with natural gas, but believes the combination of renewables and natural gas will provide the optimal blend for maintaining supply reliability year-round and meeting growing peak demand needs.

Overall, the MISO and US Midwest has traditionally been very reliant on coal-fired generation. Michigan recently passed a state-level target of 2,500MW of storage deployments by 2030, becoming the first state in the Midwest to adopt a 100% clean energy standard by 2040.

At the end of last year, with the passing of clean energy legislation, Michigan set the pace for energy transition in the Midwest. With coal plant retirements, the Midwest needs capacity to make up for supply shortfalls and with demand also increasing with electrification, it means the fundamentals are in place for the Midwest to become one of the biggest battery storage markets in the US.

At the end of 2022, MISO added storage to its wholesale market portfolio using the storage resource (ESR) definition employed by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). MISO modeled its portfolio on 4-hour lithium-ion battery storage, resulting in developers proposing BESS projects of that duration like AES Indiana's Pike County project.

[SMM News] Lithium Africa Samples 1.98% Lithium Oxide at Agboville's Kanien Trend
September 15th Lithium Africa has defined a second spodumene trend at its Agboville Project in Côte d'Ivoire, with rock samples returning up to 1.98% lithium oxide (Li2O). The company reports 19 spodumene-bearing pegmatite samples from the Kanien trend, 14 above 1% Li2O, extending 2.8 km along a sheared muscovite granite within the licence. Kanien is the district's second primary spodumene trend, alongside the Saby trend, where trenching returned 8 m at 1.1% Li2O. CEO Thomas Benson said the results point to an emerging lithium district rather than isolated occurrences. Kanien lies along strike of spodumene samples up to 1.36% Li2O on an adjacent licence, together defining a spodumene pegmatite corridor of about 7 km across the licence boundary. The company holds about 485 km² of granted licence via a 50/50 joint venture, and has applied for the adjacent 368 km² Sikensi licence. A 2,000 m RC drilling program at Saby was paused for the rainy season after 1,137 m, with results targeted for Q4 2026. The Agboville licence covers 399.27 km², about 85 km north of Abidjan, adding a new West African exploration target to the global spodumene pipeline.

[SMM News] Surge Evolution Nevada North Joint Venture Produces Battery-Grade Lithium Carbonate
The Nevada North Lithium joint venture between Surge Battery Metals and Evolution Mining has produced 99.95% battery-grade lithium carbonate (Li2CO3) from project ore in the US, supporting a Prefeasibility Study for the project. Kemetco Research produced crude Li2CO3 assaying 99% from the Nevada North master composite via beneficiation, sulphuric acid leaching, solution purification, and carbonate precipitation. A portion was refined to the 99.95% battery-grade product. Leaching achieved lithium extractions above 93% at 475 kg acid per tonne of feed, rising to about 98% at higher acid addition, completing within one hour at 90°C. Attrition and screening recovered 98.9% of lithium into the fine fraction while rejecting about 75% of the acid consuming carbonate. CEO Greg Reimer said the work demonstrates the full chain from sedimentary clay to refined battery-grade product. Focus now shifts to pilot-scale testing of recovery, consistency, reagent consumption, and energy performance. Surge also holds the San Emidio Lithium Project in Nevada, adding a US clay-based lithium supply source to the market pipeline.

[SMM News] American Lithium Achieves Higher-Than-Expected Recovery Rates at Falchani Pilot Plant in Peru
Lithium Corporation has fully commissioned and started operating its Falchani lithium pilot plant, in Peru, with operating systems performing as expected. The plant, advanced by consultancy TECMMINE in Lima, is achieving average lithium extraction rates of 88.7%, above the 80% recovery rate expected in a 2024 preliminary economic assessment. With all flowsheet equipment installed and testing, American Lithium is advancing toward full end-to-end flowsheet validation at scale in continuous mode, to confirm bench-scale results. The pilot plant is expected to run continuously at target rates for three months, processing six to ten tonnes of ore from Falchani. Results will feed into future feasibility work.Falchani's volcanic-hosted lithium mineralisation has naturally low impurities, supporting a simple flowsheet capable of producing battery-grade lithium carbonate exceeding 99.5% purity, adding a potential new South American lithium supply source to the market.
