BASF partners with Stena Recycling: BASF has announced a partnership with the European company Stena Recycling. The collaboration will involve the purchase of black material as the core product in the battery recycling process. The purpose of this partnership is to develop a value chain for the recycling of electric vehicle batteries in Europe. As part of the collaboration, Stena Recycling will be responsible for the collection, evaluation, and pre-treatment of discarded lithium-ion batteries and production scrap. Subsequently, the company will produce black material from these raw materials. Meanwhile, BASF will focus on recovering valuable metals such as lithium, nickel, cobalt, and manganese from the black material at the Schwarzheide prototype metal refinery. The recovered metals will be used for the production of new cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries. Both companies intend to commercialize the model developed by BASF for metal refining in Europe's battery recycling facilities.
