China has 20.41 million new energy vehicles running on roads by end of 2023

In a recent announcement from China's Ministry of Public Security, China had 435 million motor vehicles running on roads by the end of 2023, with 336 million being automobiles.

Shanghai (Gasgoo)- In a recent announcement from China's Ministry of Public Security, China had 435 million motor vehicles running on roads by the end of 2023, with 336 million being automobiles.

The year 2023 saw the registration of 34.8 million new motor vehicles, representing a marginal increase of 0.05% compared to 2022. Among them, newly registered automobiles accounted for 24.56 million, a 5.73% increase over the previous year, maintaining a continuous trend of surpassing 20 million units of registrations annually for the past decade.

As of 2023, 94 cities nationwide boast motor vehicle population exceeding a million units, with an increase of ten cities compared to 2022. Among them, 43 cities surpass the two-million-unit mark, and 25 cities exceed three million units. Cities such as Chengdu, Beijing, Chongqing, Shanghai, and Suzhou lead the pack, each with over five million vehicles.

By the end of 2023, the total number of new energy vehicles (NEVs) in China reached 20.41 million units, constituting 6.07% of the entire automobile fleet. Among these, pure electric vehicles accounted for 15.52 million units, making up 76.04% of the total NEV count.

In 2023 alone, 7.43 million new energy vehicles were registered, making up 30.25% of the total new car registrations. This signifies a substantial 38.76% increase compared to 2022, showcasing the sector's rapid growth from 1.2 million units in 2019 to 7.43 million units in 2023.

As of the end of 2023, the total number of licensed motor vehicle drivers in China reached 523 million, with automobile drivers comprising 486 million, constituting 92.92% of the total. In 2023, the country issued new driving licenses to 24.29 million individuals.
