Africa’s primary aluminium production in Aug’23 marks a dip to 135,000t, accounting for 2.2% of world’s output

According to the International Aluminium Institute, Africa’s primary aluminium production stood at 135,000 tonnes in August 2023 (31 calendar days), accounting for 2.23 per cent of the world’s total output of 6.044 million tonnes. Last month, Africa’s share of the world’s primary aluminium production was 2.26 per cent, and that in the previous year was 2.35 per cent.

On a month-on-month calculation, Africa’s primary aluminium output in August edged a fall of 0.74 per cent from 136,000 tonnes, and on a year-on-year basis, the production volume decreased by 3.57 per cent from 140,000 tonnes.
The daily average primary aluminium production in Africa during August’23 was 195,000 tonnes compared to 194,500 tonnes in July. That reflected a growth of 500 tonnes in daily production despite a drop in monthly output.
In the first eight months of 2023, Africa produced 1.059 million tonnes of primary aluminium, down by 1.94 per cent from 1.080 million tonnes during the corresponding period of the previous year.
World’s primary aluminium production also witnessed a marginal growth in August 2023, reaching 6.044 million tonnes compared to 6.030 million tonnes in July. However, on an annual calculation, world’s primary aluminium output in the said month saw a hike of 1.58 per cent from 5.950 million tonnes.
Global Aluminium Industry Key Trends to 2030
From January to August 2023, the world primary aluminium output totalled 46.538 million tonnes – 1.66 per cent higher than 45.780 million tonnes during the same period last year.
