Indonesia Is Investigating Massive Illegal Nickel Ore Exports to China for Causing Huge Losses of Royalties and Export Taxes

Indonesian authorities are investigating alleged illegal shipments of nickel ore worth 14.5 trillion rupiah to China starting in early 2020.

Indonesian authorities are investigating alleged illegal shipments of nickel ore worth 14.5 trillion rupiah to China starting in early 2020.

The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) recently revealed that from January 2020 to June 2022, about 5.3 million mt of Indonesian nickel ore was illegally shipped to China. This has caused an estimated loss of 575 billion rupiah in royalties and export taxes.

Mr Muhammad Wafd, acting director-general for minerals and coal mining at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, said his office was coordinating with relevant agencies, including the Indonesian embassy in Beijing.
