Lithium Carbonate Import Price Soared in March from a Year Ago

China’s lithium carbonate imports were 17,428 mt in March, a month-on-month increase of 85% and a year-on-year growth of 58%.

China’s lithium carbonate imports were 17,428 mt in March, a month-on-month increase of 85% and a year-on-year growth of 58%.

Imports from Chile proliferated by 87% month-on-month, while those from Argentina jumped by 64% month-on-month.

The average import price stood at $61,335/mt in March 2023, a drop of 23% month-on-month but a surge of 183% year-on-year. The average import price from Chile stood at $64,452/mt, down 24% month-on-month.

Around 78% of imported lithium carbonate went to Shanghai, 10% to Fujian, 6% to Jiangsu and 4% to Sichuan. Lithium carbonate imports totalled 21,307 mt from January to March 2023, a year-on-year increase of 41%.

On March 16, the Longwan District Bureau of Ecology and Environment released the environmental impact assessment public notice for the "Spent Power Battery Dismantling and Standardized Cascade Utilization Project" undertaken by a battery energy company in Wenzhou. The project primarily involves battery assembly processes. It will add an annual capacity for cascade utilization of 5,000 tons of spent lithium-ion batteries, which are primarily used for base station backup power and energy storage systems.
