EU member states finalised a landmark agreement on Tuesday local time to approve a ban on the sale of new fossil fuel cars from 2035. The agreement follows a consensus between the EU and Germany to allow continued sales of new cars running on carbon-neutral synthetic fuels that burn like petrol and diesel but emit fewer climate-impacting gases. At a meeting of EU energy ministers, Poland voted against the law, while Italy, Bulgaria and Romania abstained. Poland said the law was unrealistic and could raise car prices, while Italy wanted an exemption for cars using biofuels.
