SHANGHAI, Jan 6 (SMM) - The Chinese New Year holidays which come earlier this year will have an impact on the structure of SHFE copper contracts sooner. The backwardation of the SHFE January copper contract over the February contract stood at between 30-100 yuan/mt this week. This structure is likely to change soon.

January would be the off-season for copper cathode due to the CNY. Public health problems caused some copper semis processing plants to shut down earlier and resume production late. Therefore, the market is pessimistic over demand. According to SMM statistics, the total social inventory of copper cathode (including bonded warehouses) has continued to increase from 125,800 mt on December 23, 2022 to 164,000 mt. In addition to increased shipments from smelters, this also reflected the poor downstream purchasing interest.

SMM reported that spot premiums of #1 copper cathode dived from 180 yuan/mt on January 3 to 45 yuan/mt on January 5. The continuous decline in the premiums can hardly sustain the expansion in the backwardation structure of SHFE January copper contract over the February contract. A reversal is of the structure is on the horizon.

To sum up, expectations over the fundamentals are unlikely to sustain the small backwardation structure. The structure will change amid stock accumulation.

R32 Refrigerant Dominates as China's Air Conditioning Sector Embraces Green Transition
Against the backdrop of the continued advancement of China's "dual carbon" strategy, the green transformation of the refrigeration and air conditioning industry has moved from the policy guidance phase into the deep-water zone of full implementation. Low-GWP, cost-effective R32 refrigerant is rapidly becoming the dominant mainstream choice in the household air conditioner and light commercial unitary unit markets. ChinaIOL data shows that in 2025, the penetration rate of R32 in new domestic household air conditioners exceeded 97%, while the export market penetration rate approached 70%. During the year, China's total R32 production reached 285,000 mt, up 6.9% YoY.

Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Valve Components Q2 Market Trends
ChinaIOL data shows that in Q2 2026, domestic sales of air conditioning valve components reached 223.675 million units, down 2.0% YoY. Affected by persistently high inventory in the downstream air conditioning industry and the diminishing marginal effect of the national subsidy policy, channel players remained focused on destocking existing inventory, with limited willingness to actively restock, leading to a sharp decline in procurement demand for valve components. Notably, solenoid valves and thermal expansion valves achieved strong counter-trend growth this quarter, driven by rising downstream export orders, with both posting double-digit YoY growth.

Haier Smart Home Partners with Paris Retailers for Brazil's Largest Online and Offline Appliance Networks
On September 5, Haier Smart Home signed strategic cooperation agreements with two retailers in Paris, gaining immediate access to Brazil’s largest online traffic pool and largest offline home appliance network. From a broader perspective, Haier skipped the traffic-building phase of a cold start and embedded itself directly into Brazil’s most mature commercial ecosystem, moving from channel expansion to omnichannel brand operations. With local air conditioner and television production lines already in operation and refrigerator and washing machine capacity under planning, this deal completes the cycle of local manufacturing, omnichannel sales, and data-driven operations.
