The demand for nickel in the battery industry will surge by more than 500% in the next decade.

Bao Wenjun, head of metals and mining market analysis at BHP Billiton, said at the launch of the report, "Primary nickel demand is expected to increase by 1.3 million tons over the next decade. From 2020 to 2030, the demand for primary nickel in the battery industry is expected to increase by about 700000 tons, or more than 500 per cent, accounting for more than 20 per cent of the total global demand for primary nickel. " "at present, about 85 per cent of BHP's nickel metal is used in the global manufacture of battery materials for electric vehicles, compared with about 21 per cent in 2017 and less than 5 per cent a few years ago."
