On December 20, the Investment Review Commission, Taiwan's economic authority, said in a statement that TSMC had obtained approval to set up a chip factory in Japan, according to foreign media reports.

In November, TSMC said it would work with Sony to set up a $7 billion chip factory in Japan. TSMC produces some of the most advanced semiconductors in the world. "the technology adopted by TSMC's new plant in Japan lags at least a generation or more behind Taiwan, so there is no need to worry about the outflow of high-end technology," the Investment Review Commission, Taiwan's economic authority, said in a statement. "

It is reported that TSMC is considering building the chip plant in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, which will use land held by Sony, close to Sony's image sensor factory. The new plant will produce chips for cars, camera image sensors and other products and is expected to start production in 2024, according to people familiar with the matter.

Japan intends to pay about half of the cost of building its semiconductor factories in order to consolidate its chip supply, according to senior Japanese officials. The first batch of Japanese government assistance is likely to be the $7 billion chip plant planned by TSMC and Sony, which Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has promised to help build. In exchange for subsidies, the government will ask the factory to make a commitment to give priority to the supply of chips to the Japanese market.

TSMC is the largest contract chip manufacturer in the world and occupies the largest share of the global chip manufacturing market. As the global shortage of semiconductors worsens, TSMC's market share is rising.
