Sergei Dubovitsky, senior vice president of Russian mining giant Norilsk Nickel, said that in response to inquiries from companies such as Apple and Tesla, the company plans to produce the first batch of carbon-neutral nickel this year, according to a recent report. Norilsk Nickel is launching a carbon-neutral nickel project to test the market and understand the depth of demand for such products

Measures include modernising power equipment-replacing turbines with more efficient turbines, which will increase the share of renewable energy in energy production (Norilsk Nickel now gets 46 per cent of electricity from renewable energy). The company also announced to improve energy efficiency and optimize energy consumption.

, Norilsk Nickel has reduced its carbon footprint by more than 70000 tons in the past two years. In early June, the company's board of directors approved a new environmental strategy to further reduce harmful emissions and improve energy efficiency.

At present, Norilsk Nickel is at a low level in the global greenhouse gas emission intensity index and takes the lead in the use of renewable energy: renewable energy accounts for 46 per cent of power generation for the group as a whole in 2020.
