Recently, Sherritt released production results for 2020 and guidelines for 2021, with the Moa joint venture producing 31506 tons of finished nickel in 2020, down nearly 5 per cent from last year, and 3370 tons of finished cobalt, roughly the same as last year. In 2019, its nickel and cobalt production was 33108 and 3376 tons, respectively.

Output in 2020:

Production of finished nickel and cobalt products in the first quarter of 2020 was disrupted by railway services in the first quarter and extended plant shutdowns in the third quarter, due to increased scope of work found and reduced availability of contractors due to COVID-19 and adverse effects on unplanned maintenance of autoclaves in the fourth quarter. The total production achieved by the Moa joint venture in 2020 benefited from other health and safety measures implemented in the first quarter to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

By 2021, the Moa joint venture is expected to produce between 32000 and 34000 tons of nickel and 3300 and 3600 tons of cobalt, respectively. Production in 2021 is expected to be in line with the initial guidance for 2020 and the recent performance of the Moa joint venture, reflecting a continuing commitment to operational excellence and employee health and safety.

[SMM Nickel Flash] Based on nickel ore prices from 25 days ago, smelter profits for high-grade NPI remained high this week. However, from the current raw material side, ore prices from both the Philippines and Indonesia increased, while auxiliary material prices saw a slight pullback, leading to an increase in the cash cost of producing high-grade NPI from spot ore. At the same time, high-grade NPI prices experienced some pullback, making it difficult for smelter profits to see sustained improvement.

[SMM Nickel Flash] This week, due to a sharp decline in futures triggering arbitrage selling, high-grade NPI prices fell significantly. However, after the selling activity subsided, upstream quotations and the market center gradually returned to normal levels, supported by cost factors. Looking ahead, as the Chinese New Year holiday approaches, market activity is expected to remain subdued, and high-grade NPI prices are projected to hover at highs with limited fluctuations.
