SHANGHAI, Sep 29 (SMM) — As it is approaching the National Day/Mid-Autumn Festival holidays, SMM has conducted a survey about refined nickel industry's production arrangements for the upcoming holidays.

Here are the details of the SMM survey:

Refined nickel smelters: There are 6 smelters with refined nickel capacity in China, among which smelters in Gansu, Xinjiang, Jilin and Shandong are in continuous production. The management personnel adopt the rest system of duty system, and the production line workers maintain normal shifts, so it will not affect the monthly output. However, Tianjin and Guangxi smelters have suspended scheduled production in refined nickel before, and concentrated resources to produce nickel sulfate. It is expected that there will be no recovery plan before the end of the year.

Alloy: Most alloy enterprises have entered the full production state in September. Large alloy steel mills have been continuously producing due to the good new orders received during the National Day, and small and medium-sized enterprises have only taken three days off. At the same time, various manufacturers have already made pre-holiday stockpiling at the end of September, which is expected to guarantee the use of raw materials until mid-October.

Electroplating: Electroplating industry continues to be affected by poor export orders. At the same time, various places also have certain environmental protection requirements, so most enterprises plan to give all employees holidays according to legal holidays. Among them, large enterprises have daily duty arrangements for managers and front-line production departments.

Stainless steel: In view of the high marginal cost such as equipment suspension, the workers go to work normally, which means, the steelmakers maintains normal production during holidays, and the output of finished products will not fluctuate abnormally. The management personnel and staff in other necessary positions (such as purchasing, etc.) take the shift system.

Spot trading companies: Since Shanghai Futures Exchange is closed during the National Day holidays, most trading companies implement statutory holiday arrangements and have eight days off.

Data Source Statement: Except for publicly available information, all other data are processed by SMM based on publicly available information, market communication, and relying on SMM‘s internal database model. They are for reference only and do not constitute decision-making recommendations.

High-Grade NPI Smelter Profits Squeezed as Ore Prices Rise and Sales Prices Dip
[SMM Nickel Flash] Based on nickel ore prices from 25 days ago, smelter profits for high-grade NPI remained high this week. However, from the current raw material side, ore prices from both the Philippines and Indonesia increased, while auxiliary material prices saw a slight pullback, leading to an increase in the cash cost of producing high-grade NPI from spot ore. At the same time, high-grade NPI prices experienced some pullback, making it difficult for smelter profits to see sustained improvement.
