Live broadcast notice: where will aluminum ash go with the release of the new "solid waste Law"? How does it affect the domestic aluminum industry?

Published: Sep 8, 2020 11:37
Wednesday (September 9) 16: 00 in the afternoon, we will see you again.

As the final year of promoting the reform of the solid waste import management system, in mid-2020, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment held a press conference to mention that "starting from 2021, the import of solid waste will be completely banned." the Ministry of Ecology and Environment will no longer accept and approve applications related to the import of solid waste. At the same time, the newly revised Law on the Prevention and Control of Environmental pollution by solid waste will come into effect on September 1 this year.

Under the background of the construction of modern environmental governance system and the full implementation of the new solid waste Law, what kind of impact will domestic recycled aluminum enterprises face?

At 1600 p.m. on Wednesday, SMM specially invited Yi Liang, a senior analyst of the aluminum industry, to conduct an online live broadcast on WeChat Mini Programs's "SMM+" to analyze the current situation of recycled aluminum industry from "aluminum ash" treatment to the future trend of recycled aluminum, and to analyze the impact of the new "solid waste Law" on the domestic aluminum industry.

LVB entrance: "SMM+" WeChat Mini Programs

Time: 16:00, September 9, 2020 (this Wednesday)

Topic of the speech:

1. The problem of "aluminum ash in danger"-- the origin and implementation of the policy.

2. The present situation of aluminum ash treatment and the countermeasures of enterprises at present.

3. The possible influence of the change of aluminum ash treatment on aluminum industry.

4. Other effects of the new solid waste Law.

[SMM Aluminum Market Flash] SMM VP Wang: Indonesia Aluminum Mirrors Nickel's Path, A Decade Behind, Full Chain by 2036
At the 2026 SMM Indonesia Critical Minerals Conference, SMM VP Shirley Wang said Indonesia's aluminum industry is following nickel's trajectory roughly a decade behind: raw bauxite exporter in 2014, Chinese-backed smelting expansion using nickel's existing infrastructure in 2026, and a fully integrated domestic cluster with recycling targeted by 2036. Nickel's pre-built power grids, deepwater ports, and industrial parks have compressed aluminum project timelines from 5-7 years to 1-2 years. Electrolytic aluminum generates ~36x more gross profit per MWh than NPI, making it the priority dispatch choice under grid constraints. Globally, Africa holds the bauxite, Asia concentrates alumina, and smelting is geographically distributed with no single country dominant.

[SMM Aluminum Flash News] US, EU, Canada and Japan Aluminium Associations Raise Concerns Over China’s Subsidy Support
Aluminum associations from the United States, Europe, Canada and Japan highlighted OECD data showing that global aluminum-sector subsidies totaled USD118.3 billion during 2005-2024, with China accounting for USD101.4 billion, or 86% of the total. In 2024 alone, China received USD10.2 billion of the sector’s USD11.1 billion global subsidies. Industry groups noted that China’s share of global primary aluminum output has risen from 11% to 61% over the past two decades, with subsidy-supported growth extending into downstream processing and recycling. The associations called for coordinated measures, including import monitoring systems, tariff alignment and potential scrap export restrictions, to strengthen supply-chain security and support fair competition.
