SMM8: (CATL), Tesla's supplier, China Contemporary Ampere Technology Co., Ltd., is developing a new type of nickel-or cobalt-free EV battery, according to an executive.

Meng Xiangfeng, senior director of CATL, told an industry conference held by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers in Shanghai that the new battery type will be different from existing NCA,NCM and LFP batteries and will not contain expensive metals such as nickel or cobalt.

CATL has also developed a separate technology to integrate the battery unit directly into the EV framework to expand its driving range.

Currently, battery manufacturers, including Japan's Panasonic and South Korea's LG Chemical, are reducing the use of expensive cobalt in nickel-cobalt-aluminum (NCA) batteries or nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) batteries.

Tesla's boss, Elon Musk (Elon Musk), last month urged miners to produce more nickel and warned that current battery costs remain a major obstacle to the company's development.

Ningde-based CATL makes NCM batteries and supplies lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries to Tesla. It has established partnerships with Toyota and Honda in Japan and supplies products to Volkswagen and Daimler in Germany.
