SMM7 13 North China Copper spot Market Express: copper skyrocketed downstream fear of high precision scrap price spread to expand buying to scrap copper

Published: Jul 13, 2020 17:58 (GMT+8)

SMM July 13: today, the spot price of electrolytic copper in North China is quoted as a discount of 10 to 50 yuan per ton for that month's contract, with a transaction price of 52690 yuan / ton to 53390 yuan / ton. Driven by the bullish atmosphere, the global market showed an all-round red phenomenon. Lun Copper rose to its highest level in nearly two years, and the price of copper in Shanghai rose by more than 5%, soaring by more than 2, 000, rising to a high of 53400 yuan / ton, and downstream purchasing turned weak. Smelters and traders were forced to take the initiative to reduce their prices to attract downstream buyers. Today's prices are already discounted, and the average price of rising and discounting is 30 yuan / ton lower than last Friday. It is reported that copper prices have skyrocketed, scrap prices have risen relatively slowly, and the price gap between refined waste has widened again. At present, the price gap between refined copper has widened from the original 2100 yuan / ton to 2600 yuan / ton, the space for scrap copper and electrolytic copper has expanded, and more northern processing enterprises have turned to scrap copper materials. Scrap copper occupies an obvious market for refined copper.

Peru sees 1 million t/y copper output boost within five to six years
Peru's Energy and Mines Minister Guillermo Shinno said the country expects to add about 1 million tonnes of annual copper production within five to six years through new mining projects. The world's third-largest copper producer anticipates 2026 output of 2.5 to 2.7 million tonnes, roughly unchanged from 2023 as declining ore grades and recurring social conflicts weigh on supply. The newly elected government is seeking to reverse that stagnation by cutting red tape; in the two months since taking office, mining companies have stepped up engagement with the ministry. Shinno said officials have identified 27 permits that could be eliminated from roughly 100 mining-sector requirements, without lowering environmenta

Sulphuric Acid Shortage Emerges as a Constraint on Zambia’s Copper Growth
Zambia’s sulphuric acid shortage is becoming a growing constraint on copper production and refining. Jubilee Metals reported acid costs rising by more than 200% in Q4 FY2026, while Sable cathode output fell to 250 t from 361 t in Q3. Government data also showed small-scale copper production down 35.2% YoY in H1 2026, highlighting the sector’s exposure to tight acid availability and higher processing costs.
