SMM6: on May 29th, 2020, accidental damage to the diesel storage tank led to the leakage of 21 kilotons of fuel from the No. 3 Thermal Power Plant (HPP-3) near Kayerkan in the city of (Norilsk) in Norilsk. The accident was caused by the sudden sinking of the support column in the basement of the tank. HPP-3 is located in remote areas and no local communities are affected. HHP-3 is operated by Norilsk-Taymyr Energy, a subsidiary of Norilsk Nickel, (NTEC).

Emergency teams from Nornickel and NTEC immediately arrived at the scene to start the clean-up work. The city of Norilsk and the Taymir area have declared a regional emergency and an emergency team chaired by the mayor of Norilsk has been set up.

Norilsk Nickel's NTEC and the government's environmental agency (Rosprirodnadzor) organized a joint aerial inspection of the Norilo-Pyasinsky water system to look for possible diesel pollution incidents. In response to the oil spill in the water, a special team from the Murmansk Maritime Rescue Bureau (a special department of the Ministry of Transport) has been brought in. The department has rich experience in cleaning up the oil spill and has solved more than 50 accidents. At present, special closed barrels near the mouth of the Ambaka River have been launched to collect any petroleum products and prevent their further spread.

Norilsk Nickel has mobilized a total of 250 personnel and 72 equipment projects to clean up. As of 3 June, a total of 262 tons of diesel fuel had been collected near HHP-3, a total of 800 cubic metres of contaminated soil had been removed, and about 80 tons of fuel had been collected from the oil spill to the Ambanaya River. Currently, the NTEC team is inspecting emergency diesel storage equipment and paying special attention to assessing the risk of hazardous objects sinking into the soil in the permafrost.
