[SMM News] the US non-agricultural data were sharply lower than expected, and the metal market generally fell.

Published: Apr 3, 2020 22:50

SMM4, March 3: tonight, the United States released March non-agricultural data, the United States in March after the seasonal decline of 701000 non-farm payrolls, the lowest since March 2009. The US unemployment rate rose to 4.4 per cent in March, the highest since August 2017. The data were once again sharply lower than expected and the metals market was generally lower. As of 22:50, Lun Copper fell nearly 0.5%, Lun Aluminum fell nearly 1.6%, Lun Zinc rose nearly 0.1%, Lun Ni fell nearly 0.4%, Lun Xi fell nearly 1%, and Lun lead fell nearly 2.2%.

Industry agencies said the March non-farm report covered the period before March 12, when no major state in the United States began to impose a blockade, and the market reaction was so lukewarm that there was little meaningful impetus.

As for late-stage economic data, industry expectations are more pessimistic. Employment data in the United States are generally collected in the middle of the month, which means that the data for-701000 people do not fully reflect the situation over the past two weeks. Initial claims for unemployment benefits have soared in the past two weeks. In addition, most of the data were collected before the government issued home orders. Non-farm payrolls are expected to fall by millions in April.

Macroeconomic Factors Drive Platinum Prices, US Monetary Policy Influences Investment Demand
[SMM Flash] Platinum’s near-term price outlook is increasingly being driven by macroeconomic conditions rather than physical market fundamentals, according to the World Platinum Investment Council’s latest analysis. The platinum-gold price correlation has reached 0.95 since the start of 2025, while platinum has also shown a 1.3x beta to gold. Despite an estimated potential 2026 surplus following approximately 750 koz of year-to-date ETF outflows and reductions in exchange stocks, the market remains structurally tight after sustained deficits since 2023 depleted above-ground inventories. Expectations for US monetary policy are becoming increasingly important for platinum investment demand. The probability of a September 2026 US rate hike reportedly fell from 64% to 32% between August 1 and 19 as Q2 GDP growth slowed to 1.5%, July payrolls came in 23,000 lower and July CPI eased to 3.4%. A continued moderation in rate-hike expectations could support precious metals and encourage renewed platinum investment flows, potentially pushing the market back into deficit in 2026. Longer term, platinum's supply constraints and applications in hydrogen technologies, semiconductors and AI data centres continue to underpin its investment case.

Northam Platinum Shares Surge 11% on Unnamed Producer's Takeover Interest
[SMM Flash] Northam Platinum Holdings shares surged as much as 11% on Tuesday after the South African PGM producer disclosed that it had received an unsolicited, exploratory and non-binding approach from an unnamed major PGM producer. The company subsequently launched a competitive process to consider proposals from pre-selected third parties and other credible interested parties, although it stressed that no decision has been made on a transaction or structure. Northam’s shares closed 3.1% higher, valuing the company at about R118 billion ($7.4 billion). The development highlights renewed consolidation interest in South Africa’s PGM sector following significant industry restructuring in recent years. Northam, which produced nearly 940,000 ounces of PGMs last year, is expanding production towards a targeted 1.5 million ounces by the early 2030s as primary supply is expected to decline. Any potential transaction will be assessed against Northam’s standalone prospects, while the identity of the interested producer will only be disclosed if a credible proposal is made and accepted.

Tharisa Signs 5-Year Offtake Agreement with Valterra for Zimbabwe's Karo Platinum Project
[SMM Flash] Tharisa Plc’s Zimbabwean unit has signed a five-year offtake agreement with Valterra Platinum for the sale of platinum concentrate from the Karo Platinum Project, ahead of first production expected in 2027. The agreement provides offtake certainty as Tharisa advances the project, which is targeting approximately 226,000 ounces of PGMs annually during Phase 1. Valterra operates the nearby Unki mine and smelter, located roughly 200 km from Karo, providing a strategically positioned processing partner for the new operation. The agreement follows Karo’s 25-year Special Mining Lease signed with the Zimbabwean government on August 24, marking another significant step towards project development. Karo is expected to add to Zimbabwe’s growing PGM production base, where existing producers largely smelt concentrates domestically before shipping matte to South Africa for final refining. The offtake deal strengthens the commercial foundations of Karo while potentially increasing Zimbabwe’s role in regional PGM supply and supporting Valterra’s integrated smelting and refining network.
