China’s imports of aluminium scrap plunged 47.3% from the previous month to 60,240 mt in Oct

SHANGHAI, Nov 26 (SMM) – China’s imports of aluminium scrap plunged 47.3% from September to 60,240 mt in October, according to data from China customs.

The US was the top aluminium scrap exporter to China, followed by Malaysia.

China’s imports of aluminium scrap from the US stood at 19,113 mt last month, down 31.2% from a month ago and 27.9% from a year ago.

Volumes that originated from Malaysia almost tripled from the corresponding month of 2018, but decreased 59.9% from the previous month to 5,860 mt.

Import quotas for metal scrap issued by Chinese authorities for the fourth quarter declined sharply from the previous quarter, as Beijing aims to cut imports of “solid waste” to zero by the end of 2020.

Scrap shortages, meanwhile, prompted Chinese secondary aluminium producers and processors to step up purchases of seaborne unwrought aluminium alloys.
